Introduction

A specific category of pesticides used to control unwanted plants during cultivation are referred to as herbicides. It is mainly used in agricultural production and turf management. It constitutes the largest category of pesticides accounting for more than 40% of market share. One of the most widely sold active ingredients in the herbicide market is Glyphosate. A glycine derivative, this broad-spectrum & non-selective herbicide holds the largest market share among other herbicides, globally. It kills weeds more effectively without affecting crops compared to other commercially available herbicides. At present, bio herbicide is a niche segment of the global herbicides market. It is composed of microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and insects that can target only specific weeds without harming actual crops. Commercial production of such herbicide is very low. The popularity of bio herbicide as compared to synthetic herbicide is growing due to lack of chemical toxicity & milder effect on environment.

Market Dynamics

Farmers are inclined to use herbicides with the rising labour cost and increasing shortage of labour. 2, 4-D, atrazine, glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, paraquat, pendimethalin, dicamba, fluroxypyr, and metalochlor are the most commonly used synthetic herbicides. In 2015, many countries including Germany, France and Switzerland had joined the global glyphosate banning movement. Several health professionals in Brazil and Argentina are also filing petitions for banning this herbicide based products. Hence in EU, the current market conditions will lead to slow market growth in this segment. Countries like Canada, Brazil, Srilanka, and The Netherlands are also expected to impose restrictions or bans on glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto?s Roundup weed killer, the most heavily used pesticide in the United States. Though it will lead to a slowdown in glyphosate sale, bioherbicides are offering promising alternatives to synthetic herbicides whose growing demand and increasing R&D on bioherbicides will drive the market growth of the segment.

Market Segmentation

The global herbicide market is segmented in terms of type, mode of selection, crop type and geography (country level). On the basis of mode of action, herbicides can be divided into two types, namely, selective and non-selective. Largely used generally in industrial sites, railways, waste ground and others, selective herbicides are used to destroy specific targets without harming the plants. On the other hand, non-selective herbicides are used in low quantity in forestry and other areas, and destroy plants. The demand for non-selective herbicide is growing in the market, replacing selective herbicide. Based on type the market is categorized into Glyphosate, Atrazine, Acetochlor, 2,4-D, Paraquat, Bio-Herbicide and Others. The global market is dominated by Glyphosate herbicide in terms of value and volume both. On the basis of crop type, the global herbicide market is divided into Cereals & Grains, Oilseeds & Pulses, Fruits & Vegetables and Cotton. In terms of geography, the global herbicide market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and LAMEA. Among these countries, North America and Europe dominate the global market due to comparatively high price of herbicides with respect to other regions.

Regional/Geographic Analysis

In terms of consumption of herbicides, Asia-Pacific is the dominant market, around two fifth of market share. On the other hand, in the North American region, due to relatively higher price of herbicides, the revenue generated equates to almost one third of global herbicide market. European Herbicides Market is led by France, as the country produces large volume of wheat where herbicide is used. The economic development in rural China in the recent era, caused farmers of the country to showcase interest in chemical herbicide usage. At present, China consumes more than 50% of herbicide in Asia-Pacific region. The global herbicide market is dominated by the synthetic herbicide due to its abundant commercial availability, cost efficiency, and limited commercialization of Bio herbicides.
