A coolant is a substance, typically liquid or gas, that is used to reduce or regulate the temperature of a system. An automotive coolant is a coolant designed to remove excess heat from the internal combustion engines of automobiles. Only one third of the total energy from combustion of fuel is converted to work by the operating engine. This work is used to move the vehicle. The rest two third of the energy is converted into heat,a part of which goesout with the exhaust and a part remains in the engine block. It is necessary to remove this heat in order for the engine to work efficiently. A coolant fluid adsorbs this heat, transports it to the radiator and dissipates it into to the environment, thereby “cooling” the engine. These coolants are usually a mixture of water and ethylene glycol (EG) based antifreeze.

End-user/Technology

Users of automotive vehicles are form the majority of end users of coolants. Coolants play a vital role in preserving the overall engine heat balance and protecting engine components against corrosion. An estimated 60 percent of engine downtime in the commercial trucking sector is coolant related.

Market Dynamics and Opportunities

The global market for automotive coolant is estimatedto grow at a promising rate of about 6.73% due to an increasing demand for light passenger cars and heavy-dutyvehicles with HVAC(heating, ventilation and cooling) systems. The global antifreeze market size was valued at USD 4.99 billion in 2016.The demand for automotive coolants is fueled by the increase in the number of vehicles and the average lifespan of vehicles in operation. However, the rise in demand for battery-operated electric vehicles poses a threat to automotive coolants.

Market Segmentation

The market is segmented in terms of the type of technology, type of product and the type of application. Based on technology, the global automobile coolants market is broadly categorized as inorganic additive, organic acid, hybrid organic acid and others. By product type, the market can be classified into: Ethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol and Glycerin. Further on the basis of application in automobiles, the coolant market is categorized as passenger car, commercial vehicle, two wheelers and others.

Regional/Geographic Analysis

The global automotive coolants market is dominated by Asia Pacific owing to the rising automotive sector in various countries including India, China, Indonesia and Thailand coupled with improving standard of living, consumer awareness levels, and rising disposable income. North America is the second largest market for antifreeze, and it is expected to show a steady growth due to the increased automobile manufacturing in countries like Mexico, Canada and the U.S. Increasing demand for light and heavy commercial vehicles for freight transportation will fuel the demand for heavy duty antifreeze across Europe too.
