An antifreeze is an additive to coolant which lowers the freezing point of a water-based liquid and increases its boiling point. By using an antifreeze mixture, freezing-point depression for cold environments and also boiling-point elevation for higher coolant temperature can be achieved, which provides extra protection against freezing of the coolant or overheating of the engine. Several other corrosion inhibitors are added to the antifreeze or coolant, to improve performance and efficiency.

Antifreeze is developed to make-up for the shortcomings of water as a coolant.A coolantis a fluid that flows through a device to prevent it from over-heating. The engine coolant is basically the combination of water, antifreeze, and other additives blended together. The antifreeze prevents a rigid enclosure from bursting due to expansion when water freezes.

Market Dynamics

The primary factor driving the antifreeze market is increasing vehicle sales and production across the world. These include vehicles from different segments such as pick-up trucks, Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV), and Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV). The growing automotive sector is fuelling the demand for antifreeze in both OEM and aftermarket segments. The passenger cars is expected to dominate the antifreeze market. An increase in sales results in increase in vehicle parc of passenger as well as increased miles travelled per year per country.

Rise in the average age of vehicles in operation, advanced technology, use of environment-friendly coolants, Organic Acid Technology (OAT) and the increasing requirement for protection against freezing and effective heat dissipation will possibly further drive this market. In addition, factors including favourable government initiatives, rising disposable income, growing stringent norms to enhance fuel economy, changing lifestyle and rapid urbanization will further propel market growth.

Restraints

Some of the restraining factors for this market include the stringent regulatory framework regarding coolant disposal & recycling, high rate of degradation, corrosive properties, toxicity and high cost of storage & handling.

Regional/Geographic Analysis

APAC is expected to dominate the market as it has the maximum number of potential first-time buyers of passenger carsin countries including India, Indonesia, Japan and China, which is leading to growth in the sales of passenger cars, which in turn will drive the market for automotive coolants.North America is the second largest market for antifreeze and the market growth in this region can be attributed to the higher production and demand for large engine capacity vehiclesin countries including Mexico, U.S.and Canada. North America is followed by Europe. Rising demand for light and heavy commercial vehicles across Europe for freight transportation will fuel the demand for heavy duty antifreeze.
