An automotive air filter is the engine's first line of defence against harmful pollutants and particles that can hamper its performance and even cause significant long-term damage.Filters ensure that the car runs more efficientlyby keeping harmful debris at bayand its performance has a direct bearing on the passenger satisfaction and experience. It is the vital component of a vehicle and is composed of fibrous materials which removes solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mould, and bacteria from the intake air. Filters containing an absorbent or catalyst such as charcoal (carbon) may also remove odours and gaseous pollutants such as volatile organic compounds or ozone. They also restrict particulate matter to enter into the engine's cylinders, where it can cause oil contamination and mechanical wear.

Some of the automotive air filters are rectangular or similar in shape as that of the combustion air filter, others have a unique shape to fit the available space of outside-air intakes. The poor performance of the air filter can result in inefficient functioning and lead to more emissions. In the present day scenario, increased emissions due to inefficient air filters can be a blow to the automakers.

Market Dynamics

Some of the major drivers that the market is witnessing include rising number of automotive vehicles particularly in BRICS countries, growing regulations on environment, exponential increase in the emission of greenhouse gases, growing demand for the multi-filtration system, increasing health concerns combined with growing pollution and increasing market for cabin comfort systems. Other drivers of growth for this market are increasing focus of vehicle owners on preventive maintenance, increasing average age of vehicles in operation, and increasing miles driven per vehicle.

Government bodies worldwide are formulating vehicular emission norms for checking the particulate emissions. Moreover, the US, European Union countries, and China are focusing on going green by reducing the carbon emissions significantly. This will result in a reduction of carbon emissions, which in turn, will propel growth in the global automotive air filter market during the forecast period.

Restraints

The biggest challenge for this market is the flourishing electric vehicle market which is restricting the growth of air filter market. The introduction of electric vehicles which do not need air filters is also the major threat to this industry. Fluctuating prices of raw materials like paper, fiberglass and fabrics may result in supply deficit as they are also used for other industrial purposes.
