The global space-based solar power market accounted for $425.7 million in 2020, and is projected to reach $902.2 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2021 to 2030.

The extraction of solar power from space with the help of space-based solar power system components such as solar transmitting satellites, receiving stations, radio frequency (RF) power transmission system, and photovoltaic control system. Solar panels on solar power satellites such as microwave and laser transmitting satellites converts solar power into electricity. This generated electricity is further converted into RF power and transmitted to receiving station on earth where RF power is converted back into electricity and distributed to end users through power grid.

The growth of the global space-based solar power market is driven by rise in demand for sustainable power generation and implementation of government regulations to curb environmental pollution. However, disadvantages such as threat to space solar infrastructure from space debris, high cost associated with launching & maintenance of space station, and area required for construction hamper the growth of the market, globally. Conversely, rise in investment as well as increase in R&D activities toward space-based solar power generation are expected to create potential growth opportunities for key players operating in the market.

The global space-based solar power market is segmented into solar satellite type, application, and region. Depending on solar satellite type, the market is bifurcated into microwave transmitting solar satellite and laser transmitting solar satellite. On the basis of application, it is segregated into electricity generation and space applications. Region wise, it is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.
