Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is a process of providing boilers and power plants maximum flexibility in burning variety of fuels. Circulating fluidized bed boilers are designed to provide high gas velocity in the furnace. Circulating fluidized bed boilers are capable of combusting different types of fuels such as wet coal, brown coal, and coke.

Growth of the global circulating fluidized bed boiler market is driven by rise in number of energy & power plants and industrial sectors. CFB boiler offers several advantages over other convectional boilers such as minimal bed area, owing to utilization of high velocity of fluidizers, enhanced rate of combustion efficiency, and high sulfur retention to use finer & smaller particles and minimal number of feed points for fuel. CFB boilers support wide variety of fuels as compared to bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler. CFB boilers are well suited to be used with bituminous coal, biomass, anthracite, petroleum coke, paper sludge, RPF (refuse paper & plastic fuel), and waste tires. In addition, these boilers offer high combustion efficiency as compared to BFB boiler. Other factors such as minimal environmental impact associated with use of CFB boilers is another considerable factor that drives growth of the global market.

However, CFB boilers are vulnerable to wear and tear, which increases its maintenance cost is the factor that hampers the market growth. Casting materials used in CFB boilers is major threat, owing to particles that fall with high velocity inside the CFB boilers. This factor hampers the market growth.

Addition of limestone in CFB boilers decrease concentration of sulfur dioxide emission, nitrogen oxides, and other fuel gas emissions.
