The global bio-butanediol market was valued at $190.6 million in 2020, and is projected to reach $392.9 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2021 to 2030.

Bio-butanediol is a chemical used as solvent and building block in spandex, polyurethanes, and several bioplastics. It serves as an alternative to fossil-based butanediol. It is produced from sugars derived from the hydrolysis of starch (also known as glucose syrup). It is manufactured through a single-step fermentation by a strain of E.coli bacteria, which is metabolically engineered. It is a highly versatile intermediate chemical specifically used for the production of elastic fibers, polyurethanes, and bioplastics such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Concerns over finiteness and changing climate have driven the development of bio-based products. Bio-butanediol is sustainable and highly durable compared to fossil-based butanediol. Continuous increase in adoption of sustainable and robust products along with the implementation of stringent government regulations against the use of fossil-based products is expected to drive the demand of bio-butanediol market. Furthermore, bio-butanediol offers optimum purity, similar to that of petroleum-based butanediol, which drives its acceptance in the market.

Moreover, technological advancements in the production processes and rise in production capacity are expected to reduce the cost of bio-butanediol. In addition, bio-butanediol is readily available in the market at a lower cost compared to fossil-based butanediol. It is expected that the cost will further reduce, owing to the growing production.
