The global fundus camera market was valued at $445.60 million in 2020, and is estimated to reach $710.20 million by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.50% from 2021 to 2030.

A fundus camera is a specialized device that combines a low-power microscope with an attached camera to monitor the fundus portion. Its optical design is inspired by an indirect ophthalmoscope. The fundus camera takes images of the back of the eye, which is known as the fundus. The fundus is made up of ten semi-transparent layers, each of which serves a specific purpose in the visual perception process. The central and peripheral retina, optic disc, and macula are the principal structures seen using a fundus camera.

The indirect ophthalmoscope is the foundation of the fundus camera. It is commonly utilized in fluorescein angiography, external photography, paired optic disc imaging, and fundus imaging. It's also utilized to diagnose retinal problems such glaucoma, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

Furthermore, sales of the fundus camera decreased temporarily in 2020 due to limited access to ophthalmic treatment. In addition, rising rates of mucormycosis as a result of COVID-19 comorbidity necessitate an assessment of each patient's eye health. However, individuals may require long-term monitoring for any ocular issues that arise following post COVID-19 recovery. This is predicted to increase the patients in ophthalmology departments, necessitating the purchase of more diagnostic equipment such as fundus cameras, as ophthalmologists now rely on handheld fundus cameras to keep a safe distance from patients.

The prevalence of diabetes retinopathy, cataract, conjunctivitis, retinal disorders and age-relate macular degeneration are said to increase with the rising ageing population. In addition, findings also reveals that children are also more prone to develop eye disorders such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis and night blindness among others. Vision loss due to eye diseases is a major health problem, which immensely affects the quality of life.

Vision loss is the third largest cause of impairment after anaemia and hearing loss. As per the sciencedirect, in 2020, across the globe approximately 38.5 million people were registered as blind. Cataract is the other most commonly observed eye disorder that is found in the developing nations were the access to the qualified professionals are less. Therefore, the cataract is responsible for more than 50% of the cases of blindness in some of the areas which is likely to increase the demand for the ophthalmologists to grow. Thus, owing to the above mentioned factors the market for the fundus camera is likely to grow in the coming future.

Increasing geriatric population has resulted in higher prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Furthermore, rising incidence of diabetic retinopathy is expected to increase demand for ophthalmic screening devices, subsequently driving demand for nonmydriatic handheld fundus cameras.

As per the laws and regulations by various medical devices agencies in U.S. as well as Japan, fundus imaging cameras must be replaced once in every four years. Therefore, demand for these devices is likely to increase in these developed countries in the forecast years. Supportive government regulations such as these are likely to have a positive impact on the fundus camera market.

Approximately 80% cases of blindness due to chronic diseases can be avoided by continuous and effective screening. Screening is the only way of detecting eye diseases at an early stage. In U.S., fundus photography procedures are covered by Medicare under CPT code 92250. Growing insurance coverage for such procedures is also likely to boost demand for handheld fundus camera.

Furthermore, the growing prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and glaucoma is driving the fundus camera market. Fundus camera technological improvements such as hybrid cameras, non-mydriatic cameras, and hand-held fundus cameras are also driving the fundus cameras market. Furthermore, higher healthcare expenditure and rising awareness about eye problems present opportunities for the fundus cameras market in the forecast years. However, issues with the use of fundus cameras as well as a lack of awareness are the major factors restraining the growth of the fundus cameras market.

The global fundus camera market is segmented on the basis of product, portability, end user and region. By product, the market is categorized into mydriatic fundus cameras, non-mydriatic fundus cameras, hybrid fundus cameras, and rop fundus cameras. By portability, the market is bifurcated into handheld and tabletop. By end user, it is divided into hospital, ophthalmology clinics, and others. Region wise, it is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and LAMEA.

Some of the major companies that operate in the global fundus camera market are Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Kowa Company, Ltd., Optomed Plc, Optovue Incorporated, Topcon Corporation, Clarity Medical Systems, Inc., Canon Inc., Epipole Ltd, Revenio Group Corporation (Centervue SPA), and Clarity Medical Systems, Inc.
