The global catalyst market was valued at $35.5 billion in 2020, and is projected to reach $57.5 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2021 to 2030.

Catalysts are substances that stimulate the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy required for it. However, they are not consumed during the reaction; moreover, spent catalysts can be reused after treatment. Zeolites, metals, chemical compounds, enzymes, and organometallic materials are different types of catalyst that are widely available in the market. Zeolites are a class of porous, hydrated aluminosilicates that are both, found naturally and chemically synthesized. Industrial catalysts are mostly metals, as most metals have a large number of valence electrons; this permits the catalysts to use these free electrons to aid in the reactions before recalling them once the reaction is over

The growth of the global catalyst market is driven by rise in adoption of catalyst in applications such as polymer catalysis, petroleum refining, chemical synthesis, and environmental. High degree of pollution in urban areas is due to the massive increase in use of oil products in internal combustion engines utilized for transportation. Currently, majority of the automotive market is powered by a conventional gasoline-burning internal combustion engine, though diesel engines are prominent among the automotive industry. These engines represent around 30% of the light-duty vehicle market and around 90% of the heavy-duty vehicle market is the key market trend. Stringent emission norms from EU (Europe) and EPA (U.S.) have driven OEMs toward enhanced environmental catalysts. The development of catalytic converters for gasoline engine represents among the most successful large-scale application of heterogeneous catalysts.

However, different chemical reactions require different catalyst and catalyst are expensive. This factor hampers the market growth.

Gasoline or petrol-fueled vehicles typically use a three-way catalyst, because it converts three pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen, with over 90% conversion rate. Diesel engines require a diesel oxidation catalyst to remove CO and hydrocarbons, which can also reduce particulate matter, also known as soot, by up to 50%. More effective particulate matter removal is achieved with diesel particulate filter systems. In addition, thus, the role of catalysts in reduction of environmental pollution control and in the improvement of the quality of life is significant. End of pipe applications and pollution prevention strategies are exemplified by strategic application of heterogeneous catalysis in motorcycle and stationary air de-pollution devices, or in waste water treatment may offer remunerative opportunities for the structural adhesives market in future.
