End User Industry
The end user industries are almost every industry which requires lighting. Some of the industries are automotive, housing, interior decoration, hospitals, hotels, etc. Even the government projects like roads also require LEDs for street-lighting purposes. LEDs are also used in the television industry as a replacement of the previous LCD televisions. Many electronic devices use small LEDs integrated with the product for various purposes. The toy industry also produces toys that are battery operated which require LEDs to increase attractiveness. The smartphone industries also utilize LEDs for flashlights.
Market Dynamics
The LED market is growing enormously leading to the growth of this market as well. Currently, all the new building and housing projects use LEDs as they are supposed to be highly efficient and power-saving. The traditional bulbs are being replaced at a quick pace by the LEDs.
However, as this is a very dynamic industry, if a new innovation were to be made which eradicates the usefulness of LED, then the industry should be ready to pivot to that product.
Market Segmentation
The LED packaging market can be segmented based on the type of the LED package, i.e. Lamp-LED, Side-LED, TOP-LED, High-Power LED, SMD-LED, and Flip-Chip LED. The types of LED packaged are the traditional inorganic, organic, ultra-violet, polymer, and high-brightness LEDs. It can be divided on the basis of the packaging material used, like paperboard, plastic, ceramics, etc.
Regional/Geographic Analysis
The market is growing at a high rate in Europe and North America as the number of applications with which LEDs are associated with are also increasing. The Asian market has also started to develop and is the hub for many new entrants as well. The other markets like the Latin America, Middle East, and Africa are also developing as more global players enter and local markets emerge.
Opportunities
There is growth in this industry and new entrants can try to enter the market in the LED packaging sector. However, they will face stiff competition from the existing players as they would try to retain their market share. High-tech packaging includes Plastic Leaded Chip Carriers (PLCCs), Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), and ceramic holders. Though LEDs still contain a few harmful chemicals, environmentalists still prefer them as they are currently the safest devices for lighting.
Key Players
The main players are Toyoda Gosei Co. Ltd, Nichia, AlphaLED, Samsung Corporation, Nichia Corporation, Seoul Semiconductors Co. Ltd., OsramOpto, Lumileds, Philips Corporation, Stanley Electric Co. Ltd., OSRAM Light AG, and CREE Inc.
