Hydropower is the most cost-effective method of renewable power generation where electricity is generated by converting the kinetic energy of flowing water into electric current. It is one of the oldest sources of energy generation used since thousands of years ago. It is the world's largest source of renewable power generation and with uses in over 100 countries, it accounts for nearly 20% of the world's total electricity supply.

Hydropower's efficiency of conversion is around 90%. This is one of the highest among all the energy sources. Hydropower generation is extremely flexible and hence can provide stability to the future power needs. Even though the initial investment cost is high, the overall cost of hydropower is relatively low making it a viable source of energy for millions of people around the world. Its operational and maintenance costs are quite low making it an ideal investment proposition in case of power generation options.

End-user/Technology

Almost all the countries around the globe that have natural flowing water sources are using hydropower to produce electricity. Various private organizations work in sync with national governments on hydropower projects. Hydropower works on the principle of energy conversion. The kinetic energy of water is used to run turbines which in turn generate electricity.

Market Dynamics

Conventional sources of fuel are decreasing at an alarming rate. Hence, the global hydropower demand is expected to rise significantly in the upcoming years owing to rise in population and industrialization in the developing countries. Another reason for the rise in hydropower generation is because of its independence from gas and fuel. It is a stable source of energy generation because of its immunity from raw material fluctuations. Hence, reliability, high power output, long operating life and low maintenance & operation cost are some of the salient features which will drive the hydropower market in the future.

On the other hand, the disruption in habitat and resettlement of communities is proving to be a big hurdle in the expansion of hydropower market. High initial investments along with high gestation periods are also constraining the market to reach its full potential.

Market Segmentation

The hydropower market is segmented either on the basis of capacity or on the basis of region. On the basis of capacity, the market is further sub-segmented into: -

--> Micro-hydropower plants (Capacity less than 100 KW)

--> Small hydropower plants (Capacity between 100 KW and 30 MW)

--> Large hydropower plants (Capacity more than 30 MW)

On the basis of type of capacity, the market is further sub-segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East and Africa.

Regional/Geographic Analysis

The major boost in investment in the hydropower sectorin the nearby future will be mainlyfrom three countries namely India, China, and Brazil. In terms of individual countries, currently, China is leading the way. USA and Europe are also focusing heavily on hydropower sector to meet their reduced carbon standards.

Opportunities

As conventional sources of energy have become expensive due to the depleting supply of resources, it has become essential to explore renewable energy sources. Following this, government policies have become more favourable to encourage investments in hydropower sector from both public as well as private players. The collective effect of the ever-growing energy demandis expected to drive the market at an exponential rate.Big industry playersare opting for mergers and acquisitions to expand their market share across the globe to capture the opportunities present in the market.

Key Players

Some of the key players in the global hydropower market are RusHydro, Vattenfall AB, and Alstom SA.
