High density polythene is a polythene thermoplastic formed by polymerization of ethylene obtained from petroleum. Due to its high strength to density ratio, it is used in production of plastic container/bottles, corrosion - resistant pipes. It is highly versatile type of plastic with applications ranges from food packaging, beverage bottles, cosmetics, care products, household goods and technical parts in construction sector.
Market Dynamics
HDPE market is estimated to grow during the forecast period on the account of increasing demand for packaging from various sectors. Also rising demand of its applications such as blow moulded bottles, plumbing boxes etc. will help in growth of the HDPE market. Increasing demand in Food and Beverages sector will further push the demand for HDPE manufactured products which in turn will drive the growth of HDPE market. However, fluctuations in the price of raw materials and the limitations in supply of HDPE in high volume pose a considerable challenge to the manufacturers and is restraining growth of the HDPE market.
Market Segmentation
Market can be segmented on the basis of different procedures that are used to produce different grades of HDPE such as injection moulding, profile extrusion, film and sheet extrusion, pipe extrusion and blow moulding. Blow moulded products capture the large chuck of market owing to the demand of blow moulded bottles used in food and beverages sector which is also estimated to grow in the forecast period. Rising demand for pipes and related products such as electrical and plumbing boxes and telephone ducts in the construction sector will augment the growth of HDPE market. Pipe segment is expected to grow significantly due increase in demand from construction industry in emerging markets such as China, India etc.
Increasing application of HDPE products in niche industries such as fireworks and household products will provide the opportunity for the HDPE market to grow in the years to come. Another application of HDPE is in production of films which includes packaging of film, sacks, bags and others which accounts to around 26.4% of the total market share.
Geographical Analysis
Asia-Pacific is the largest market for HDPE products accounting to around 40% due to the presence of packaging sector in this region. Also increasing government expenditure on infrastructure development in the emerging markets like India and China is expected to further boost the growth of HDPE market over the forecast period. Europe is the next in line followed by North America. The demand for HDPE products in production of film and injection moulding is the main cause of growth in Europe whereas in North American market, the growth is estimated to be sluggish due to saturated market. Latin America is expected to grow due to increase in the end use industries in the region.
Key Players
Key participants in the HDPE market include Dupont, Braskem S.A., BASF SE, Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., Dow Chemical Co., Exxon Mobil Corporation, Formosa Plastics Corporation, LyondellBasell industries NV etc.
