The word geopolymer, coined by Joseph Davidovits, has been named so because rocks of geological origin are used as the raw materials in the synthesis of silicon-based polymers. Applications of geopolymers can be extended to various fields namely medicinal applications, fire- and heat-resistant coatings and adhesives, toxic and radioactive waste encapsulation, new binders for fire-resistant fiber composites, high-temperature ceramics, new cements for concrete and other disciplines like modern inorganic chemistry, mineralogy, physical chemistry, geology, colloid chemistry, etc.
Geopolymers can be classified into two major groups? namely pure inorganic geopolymers and organic containing geopolymers, synthetic analogues of naturally occurring macromolecules. A geopolymer is essentially a chemical compound consisting of repeating units, for instance, silicon-oxide (-Si-O-Si-O-), silico-aluminate (-Si-O-Al-O-), Ferro-silico-aluminate (-Fe-O-Si-O-Al-O-) or alumino-phosphate (-Al-O-P-O-), created through a process of geopolymerization. The microstructure of geopolymers is essentially temperature dependent, being X-Ray amorphous at room temperature and crystalline matrix at temperatures above 500 ?C.
