There are 3 main systems that make up the flow cytometer instrument - the fluidics, the optics and the electronics.
The purpose of the fluidics system is to transport the particles for interrogation in a stream of fluid to the laser beam. The optics system is made up of lasers that illuminate the particles present in the stream. As these particles pass through the laser, they scatter light from the laser in different wavelengths. Any molecules that are on the particle emit fluorescence, which is then detected by precisely placed lenses. The electronics system helps changing the light signals that are detected into electronic pulses being processed by the computer. The data can then be analysed to ascertain large information over a short period. Information on heterogeneity and different subsets within cell populations can then be identified and measured.
Flow cytometry is used to perform procedures like - Cell counting, Cell sorting, Detection of biomarkers and Protein engineering.
It has numerous applications in science and healthcare. The technology has been used widely in the diagnosis of health conditions, diseases of the blood such as leukaemia, and others. It also finds application in pathology, molecular biology, immunology, marine science and plant biology. In medicine, it is a vital laboratory process used in oncology, haematology, transplantation, genetics and prenatal diagnosis. In marine biology, it helps in analysing the abundance and distribution of photosynthetic plankton.
