Contract Packaging Organisations provide a wide range of packaging services on a contractual basis. Many companies do not have in-house packaging of their products, instead, they outsource this service to external companies. Contract packagers do not market or distribute the product, they just handle the packaging (and sometimes manufacturing) of the product. A contract packager company is usually chosen if it is not feasible for a company to start in-house packaging services, or to maintain the existing relationship with the packaging companies.

End User Industry

After the manufacturing and packaging operations, the major operation that a company has to perform is sales and marketing. The verticals like food and beverages industries, or personal care industries are the end user industries as they purchase the service of these third-party vendors.

Market Dynamics

There is a great requirement for packaging and logistics vendors for the smooth functioning of the companies. Companies prefer 3PL providers more than the traditional packers as they reduce cost and time. Geographically, India is the fastest growing market and has a big scope for the existing companies to improvise and gain market share.

There is stiff competition among the existing companies as they strive for greater cost-effectiveness and faster service. Maintaining a relationship with the verticals is a big challenge for the contract packagers, so they have to provide the best service.

Market Segmentation

The contract packaging market can be segmented on the basis of services. These companies offer primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging services. These companies are also part of a variety of different verticals on the basis of which they can also be segmented. The verticals are food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, homecare products, cosmetics, fabric care industries.

Regional/Geographic Analysis

North American market is the biggest market currently, but Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing one. The Indian market is based mainly on cost competitiveness. The other markets are Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.

Opportunities

Contract packaging companies are mostly hired by companies in the food and beverages industry. In this sector, it is a fact that all the companies manufacture products that are more or less at par with each other. The only significant difference is the packaging. The same can also be said for the FMCG products. The third-party contract packagers can lure these companies by cost-effective rates and the best packaging. The pharmaceutical industry is also a great contributor to the growing market. This is also backed by the government as most pharmaceutical companies lack the required setup for medicine packaging. A combination of packaging and logistics by third-party vendors is the recent trend.

Key Players

The global leading players are DHL, Sharp Packaging Services, Berkeley Contract Packaging, Unicep, Stamar Packaging, Amcor, Ball Corporation, and DS Smith. These companies have their presence globally and are recognized for their quality packaging services.
