In the construction industry, concrete with polymers is the fundamental material used since the 1950s via Polymer Concrete (PC) and Latex Modified Concrete (LMC). PC is a polymerized mixture of a monomer, and the aggregate and LMC is conventional concrete in which latex replaces a part of the water used for mixing. Another type of concrete with polymers is Polymer-Impregnated Concrete (PIC). In PIC, a monomer is infiltrated in a hardened concrete and subsequently polymerized in situ. Currently, various new concrete containing polymers are produced with different base materials used. These components provide compressive strengths of the order of 140 MPA (20,000 psi) within hours and sometimes minutes. Therefore, these variants are a fit for emergency concreting jobs in tunnels, mines, and highways. Furthermore, they excel in chemical resistance and, high initial strength and modulus of elasticity because of which they are used in overlays and repair jobs. They also possess excellent bonding ability to hold concrete as well as high durability to aggressive solutions. Thus, they are used for rehabilitation of deteriorated bridge decks. With features as mentioned earlier, replacement of traditional concrete seems an attainable goal, thereby increasing the market for these variants of concrete.
