Ash handling systems are mostly used in thermal power plants since this is the place where maximum ash is generated. Thermal power plants all over the world use coal as their predominant source of energy. Due to its lower cost and easier availability, it has been preferred over other means of fuel. The problem with using coal as the main source of energy is that most of the coal is not of high quality. Their latent heat is lower and ash content is high. In a thermal power plant, the ash generated can be about 30%-40% of the fuel used. If this ash escapes the plant, it becomes a major concern for the environment. An ash handling system contains several parts such as a conveyor, scraper, dust collector, storage silos and other parts. Scraper chain gathers ash from the bottom of the boiler and the conveyor system transfers the ash out of the boiler. After all the processes are complete, a crusher converts the residue for easy handling and transportation of the ash contents.
