Aluminium oxide orAlumina is chemically defined with the formula AI2O3 and has an extensive usage in pharmaceutical, industrial manufacturing and various engineering processes due to its widespread chemical and physical properties. Occurring in a natural crystalline polymorphic form in minerals like bauxite and corundum, Alumina acts as an adsorbent, desiccating agent, catalyst and also in the manufacture of dental cements and refractories. Due to its amphoteric nature, Aluminium oxide finds its application in several chemical, industrial and commercial applications.

Alumina is used as an electric insulator and is used in ceramic industries due to its high thermal conductivity and is used for the production of porous ceramics. Its hardness makes its application as an abrasive material and due to its resistance to any acid or high temperatures, it's suitable for being used in manufacturing re-factories. Some other applications of aluminium oxide are in plastic filters, reflective decorative paints, removal of water from gas streams, formation of spark plug insulators, hip replacement materials and etc.

Market Dynamics:

The global aluminium oxide market has been fuelled by the ever rising demands from pharmaceutical and manufacturing processes industries. Leveraging its unique physical and chemical properties, there has been an ever steady growth of demand in the ceramics industry for alumina. It is expected to catalyse the ceramic industry in the forthcoming years with its increased usage as ceramic porous materials to enhance the thermal conductivity.

Alumina finds high applications in manufacturing re factories for being aversive to acid/alkali at a high temperature. It's also witnessing myriad of applications in the electronics industry for its thermal conductivity and high ductility, which makes it suitable for being used in thermal test machines for instrumentation. Also, Alumina's excellent biometric properties paves a path for its usage in medical transplants, haemodialysis and formation of dental cements.Applications of aluminium oxide as nanomaterials is also expected to grow significantly in the forthcoming years with aluminium oxide being a catalyst for cement production, an adsorbent, as a dispersing agent in food and as an abrasive for toothpastes.

However, there has been a recent concern in terms of exposure to alumina as a substance. Although alumina is not carcinogenic, but its short term effects include respiratory tract infection and inflammation of eyes. Medics have also suspected alumina to cause damage in human central nervous system with prolonged exposure. Nevertheless, constant improvements are still being made to enhance and explore newer and promising applications of alumina in various industries thereby enhancing the growth prospects of market players across geographies.

Market Segments:

Segments on basis of end user applications:

The global Aluminium oxide market can be segmented from an application basedperspective.Alumina's applications are wide ranged into various industries and few of which can be listed as below:

--> Pharmaceuticals

--> Ceramics

--> Industrial manufacturing

--> Medical

--> Cement

--> Food

Segments on basis of geography:Products can also be segmented on the basis of regions where the manufacture and usage of aluminium oxidehas been at the higher end. Few such geographies can be listed as:

--> APAC

--> North America

--> Europe

Geographical Analysis

Geographically, APAC holds the majority of aluminium oxide market closely followed by North America. The demand for global aluminium oxide market in APAC has seen an uplift recently due to the increase in demands from pharmaceutical industries from countries like India and China. North America, however, is expected to be driven by the enhanced usage of alumina in the ceramic industry over the forecasted period.

Key Players:

Global aluminium oxide market sees lesser competition from the market place with a highly consolidated structure. The adverse health effects of usage of alumina in the industries, however, has started to act as an obstacle in the substantial growth of its market. Companies are thereby investing in R&D ventures in order to minimize health risks due to prolonged exposure to alumina. Some key players in this industry across geographies can be thus listed as below:

SASOL Limited, MTC WESGO, Russel, Chemicals India Company, GRACE, Almatis, Tirupati industries, Vega, GIFA, Khambhalay Abrasive
