Samsung In A Battle with LG For Ai-Powered Smart Refrigerators

While every other thing on this planet is getting digitalized day by day, why to compromise with the old and boring kitchen appliances? Today, with successive developments in technology, kitchen appliances are no longer only meant to carry out their basic jobs, instead you can now connect with these appliances in a better and smarter way, and add leisure to your busy life.

Now, it’s time to get ready for the smart refrigerators, as LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have announced to unveil their updated editions of AI-powered smart refrigerators. The two South Korean tech giants declared on Wednesday that they would demonstrate their smart refrigerators at the forthcoming Consumers Electronics Show 2020, which will be held in Las Vegas, U.S., from January 7 to 10. This is not the first time these two big brands are introducing smart refrigerates, however, this year they are back with some enhanced AI-powered features along with some other updates.

Samsung’s latest edition of the Family Hub refrigerator and LG’s second generation InstaView ThinQ refrigerator both are equipped with cameras powered with AI that can identify food. The idea behind adding cameras to the design is to scan the items stored inside the fridge. This feature will help users know which items they are short of, and also give meal recommendations depending on the available ingredients. This is possible with the help of Whisk, a food tech startup company which was acquired by Samsung last year. Whisk helps users plan meals for up to a week and then makes a smart shopping list with ingredients that can be used in numerous recipes.

Samsung’s Family Hub smart fridge was first revealed at CES 2016, and here after, the company has been coming up with a series of updates with SmartThings integration, Bixby support, and AKG speakers. The latest version comes with software upgrades that allows AI-image recognition with its View Inside cameras. However, it is yet to test how well the software will respond to items stored in containers or packed boxes.

Lastly, the new version is equipped with a huge built-in touchscreen that can be used as a virtual bulletin board supporting video clips and also the mirror content from Samsung phones and TVs. That means you can now enjoy watching vertical videos like IGTV on your Samsung refrigerator.

On the other hand, LG is presenting two models of its InstaView refrigerator. Both these models are equipped with a 22-inch display that can turn transparent and allow users to view inside part of the fridge without opening its door and releasing the cold air out. Additionally, there is AI-equipped InstaView ThinQ and the InstaView with Craft Ice, which makes fancy two-inch spherical ice balls. And something more special about these fancy ice balls is that they melt slower than the regular ice.

Researchers have seen a growing graph for developments in smart kitchen appliances since past few years. A research report by Big Market Research states that the Global Smart Kitchen Appliance Market volume is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.2% in the coming future. Today, electronics and electrical equipment manufacturers are undeniably in a race to come up with cutting-edge technology devices that are sure to revolutionize are everyday lives.
