This bi-annual report from Canadean is designed to show past consumption trends for all commercial beverage categories and forecast trends five years into the future. Product analysis is broken down in to 21 categories: packaged water, bulk/HOD water, carbonates, juice, nectars, still drinks, squash/syrups, fruit powders, iced/rtd tea drinks, iced/rtd coffee drinks, sports drink, energy drinks, hot tea, hot coffee, beer, wine, spirits, fortified wine, dairy drinks (white milk, fermented milk, drinking yogurt, flavoured milk, soymilk, evaporated and condensed milk).
What is the current market landscape and what is changing?
West Europe is a region which generally has a temperate climate, with the weather often unpredictable. Additionally, the Eurozone crisis has led to wide scale disruption to many economies, which has had a detrimental effect on both consumption and production volumes for beverages.
What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
The vast majority of countries within West Europe are suffering from a very poor economy, with just a handful of countries showing signs of improvement. As a result, many of the more luxury categories have posted significant declines (with the exception of energy drinks and some of the dairy options). However, packaged water has been able to take advantage of these conditions and gain impressive volumes. In addition to the economy, the weather has generally been poor, hampering demand for alcohol in particular, and a growing health and well-being trend has become apparent in many countries, changing consumer habits towards low calorie products.
