Doppler wind lidar remotely measures winds by emitting a laser beam that is reflected from aerosol particles in the atmosphere that are entrained with the wind. The backscattered light is Doppler-shifted by the motion of the aerosol particles in the direction of the line of sight. This Doppler shift can be used to estimate the speed of the particles. Because those particles are of the order of 1 µm in size, they are assumed to act as tracers and thus move at the same speed as the wind.
